SIR - Regarding the mega salaries of council officers, it may be cold comfort to many in Bradford, but what Bradford Council chiefs get paid is peanuts compared to some.

Although I believe they all have one thing in common - that their wages are far too high for a non-profit making, non-competitive body which no matter what financial blunders they make or what policy disasters they create, the long-suffering taxpayer is forced to foot the bill regardless.

Their favourite comparison is the budget they deal with, often likened to a FTSE 100 company, but the bosses of those have shareholders to answer to, often very large and influential institutional ones who can and do move people on from time to time.

I can’t recall many town hall staff moving to the private sector very often and I believe we all know the reasons why.
