SIR – Not all of your readers are, I suspect, from East Ham or even the capital, but many will be thrilled that Vera Lynn, ‘the Forces Sweetheart’, has reached her century.

I confess that I replayed some of my old 78rpm Decca records (including scratches and hisses) to take me back to my wartime childhood and those desperate times.

Last Wednesday’s dreadful events prompted me to dig out another song from the period. Its composer, Noel Coward, recalled sitting waiting for the inevitably delayed train at Victoria Station and observing bewildered Londoners struggling by after another night’s attention from the Luftwaffe. He jotted down the lyrics of a delightful (rarely heard now) composition called London Pride which is very moving.
