SIR – The recent increase in the points given for using a phone while driving is unlikely to stop drivers doing it.
I have seen just as many still doing this, one driving a bus, so what does that say about the system? They just don’t care and therefore, points are not a deterrent.
It is time they were scrapped altogether and be replaced with an automatic two-year ban, no ifs or buts.
There should be a life ban should you commit a second offence which would previously have resulted in points on your licence. It may seem over the top but until it is actually a punishment, drivers will carry on doing as they please.
Let’s get drivers, who flout the law, off the roads for good.
No longer would we see reports of drivers still behind the wheel after amassing 35 points.
