SIR – As my bus passes Lister Park at present the passengers all look with unconcealed wonder at the beds of crocus which raise our spirits at the thought of spring.

Last Sunday I was further delighted when I attended Cartwright Hall for the opening ceremony of the Splendours of the Subcontinent exhibition of the treasures from the tour of India (which then included Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka) undertaken by the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) from 1875-6.

The beautiful exhibits were amazing and our excellent museum/gallery staff are to be commended for the accompanying information with each display case as well as organising two Indian dancers.

The wide range of folk there and the variety of languages I overheard added to the delightful multi-cultural atmosphere – apart from ‘Tyke’ I heard Urdu, Punjabi, Polish and even our canny Lord Mayor treated us to some Geordie!
