SIR – So-called smart meters are being heavily promoted today but what is their point? Some say to eliminate estimated bills but if you pay by direct debit any excess paid can be re-credited to your bank account by the energy supplier.

How many homes have either the gas or electric meter in a prominent position where the householder can monitor consumption? Not many. I have never experienced this either at my parents’ home or in the two houses lived in since marrying 45 years ago. I just use what’s needed. Most new properties and quite a few older ones have meters in a cabinet outside on the wall so they can be checked even if you are out.

To me anything connected with computers or automation is dubious, ie, with more possibility of mistakes made by them. I also understand that the supplier can even cut you off by remote control from miles away. This unlike now where it’s a physical operation to remove the main fuse or unscrew a pipe, with in extreme cases the pavement dug up.

After all the trouble with telephone or online banking, I’m staying on the old meters.
