SIR - With reference to your front page (‘Go West’, February 20) on the proposed extension of the motorway from Colne to the Aire Valley corridor, it is worth noting that not only does the road now end in Colne but so does the railway line.
SELRAP (Skipton and East Lancs Railway Action Partnership) has campaigned since 2001 for the re-opening of the 12-mile ‘missing link’ between Skipton and Colne (closed in 1970) which would re-connect West and North Yorkshire with East Lancashire and beyond.
Accepting that the extension of the M65 would be hugely beneficial, surely the reinstatement of the rail link, both with the same objectives, should take precedence. It would cost far less than the new motorway with fewer environmental problems and a new railway could also carry freight, reducing chronic traffic congestion.
