SIR - Saturday saw the release of a government committee report into the state of the nation’s parks and gardens, noting that, in some cases, councils had cut funding for these areas by as much as 97per cent.

There had also been a rise in vandalism, graffiti and anti-social behaviour.

While we all realise that money is tight and that caring for the sick and the elderly through the social care budget has to take priority, our parks and gardens are a vital part of preventing illness in the first place, something forgotten in the rush to slash and burn those services deemed unimportant.

Bradford Council has grassed over flower beds to save money, beds that, in summer, would please the eye and lift the spirits.

Our parks are places to take children, walk dogs, play sport or simply lie in the sun. All activities that play a huge role in keeping people well, both physically and mentally.

We need our parks - far more than the one billion pounds worth of Navy kit not ready for action at the moment.
