SIR – The T&A front page (‘Going Underground’, February 6); I could hardly believe it, east to west underground rail.

This is the “cross rail link” with a difference. It’s almost unbelievable yet with the modern machinery and technology, miles and miles under London ongoing, you never know.

The three words “cross rail link” are not well received by our councillors. During our 15 years-plus on Save the Odeon, I once mentioned the cross rail link, which brought wry smiles, raised upturned hands and the council leader saying, “Can we leave that one out, Norman?”

The rail link campaign started in the late 1840s when the Lancashire and Yorkshire rail came steaming into Bradford via the mile-long Wyke to Low Moor tunnel, but the Midland rail to the west top officials couldn’t made any agreements to link, so it never happened.

During the next 70 years after various attempts to link up, finally in 1911 councillors agreed. A start was made in stone over Forster Square but stopped with the Great War.

Maybe someday...
