SIR – I am sick and tired with the verbal abuse that is being hurled at Donald Trump.

All right, he is outspoken and does not mince his words, but that is a point in his favour. Too many ‘professional’ politicians now are far too glib, far too politically correct.

However, in his defence I must say that it is the duty of any elected leader of a country to take what measures he/she thinks advisable in order to protect his own people. So security is a major problem.

You don’t invite into your home robbers, gangsters, murderers, or, dare I say it, terrorists (or do we?).

A lot of what he says is only common sense, an approach which is no longer acceptable in these easy-going worlds of today.

As regards a State visit, we have invited many despots in the past, some with blood on their hands (including Mugabe of Zimbabwe). Do we include Donald Trump in this category?

Finally, who was it who said ‘I don’t agree with what you say but I defend to the last your right to say it’?

Thank God for someone prepared to speak out.
