SIR – I could only smile and shake my head whilst reading of the proposed bid for more 20mph roads.

I cannot disagree with slowing down traffic for as we all know speed kills. The solution however, cannot be to merely impose 20mph speed limits.

As one who lives in a 20mph area I can assure readers that these signs are not worth the effort to erect them. Drivers in my area flagrantly ignore these signs. Speeds of 40 (I estimate) are frequently reached along Avondale Road and the surrounding streets, all within the 20 zone.

The question is why does this happen?

A complete lack of enforcement is the answer. The police are so short of officers that they cannot attend burglaries let alone police speeding on the streets and PCSOs are a complete waste of time with virtually no powers.

Much as I hate to admit it, speed cameras are the only option left. Hitting speeding motorists in their pockets with the threat of points on their licence is, in my opinion the only way forward.

To impose speed limits without enforcement is to leave those who ignore them, laughing up their sleeves at the Council and carrying on speeding as usual.
