SIR – Looking at the report on increased traffic on our roads I can’t help feeling that as far as ourselves in the BD postcode area are concerned we have the problem half resolved.

The five per cent increase in deaths and injuries on our roads is unsustainable; air pollution from the combustion engine is on the rise with no one taking practical measures to address the increase.

If you are a cyclist or pedestrian you are at risk of injury or even death from, to use the words of the report, drivers that “failed to look”.

Rebuild the railway network between Bradford, Keighley and Halifax. Simple.

Hundreds of cars would be removed with people leaving them either at home or car parks at stations. If people are on a train they arrive at work (and home) less stressed. It would also reduce air pollution.

Yes, it would be unpopular among those whose homes have to be moved and businesses relocated, but can we put a price on the nightmare of future air pollution or the deaths of people from accidents? It is time we stopped trying to use the sticking plaster solution and grasped the problem with both hands.
