SIR - Jeremy Corbyn’s election was nothing short of sensational. During the campaign he had just about everything thrown at him but the proverbial kitchen sink, by people from all sides in his own party, political opponents, the media etc.

Yet, he beat three other experienced candidates in the first round with three fifths of the vote.

Things will not get much easier as he begins his term of office as leader of the opposition. Of course the old phrase, ‘keep your friends close and your enemies even closer’ may be appropriate as he will continue to face hostility on more than one front. The pressures will be great and there are powerful interests willing for him to fail.

Yet his unassuming, honest style and quiet likeability have held him in good stead and even his political adversaries acknowledge this much.

As a conviction politician, he says what he believes and not what has been passed by a focus group spin doctor.

He wants to “do things differently” as leader. All who voted for him and those who support his views hope that he will continue to upset the apple cart and effect real change.
