SIR – I WAS, as ever, hugely impressed with the whole spectacle that was the Haworth 40s Weekend.

The organising committee, volunteer stewards and the sponsors Green Deal boilers (without whose last-minute sponsorship this event may not have happened) did an exceptional job, ensuring that everyone had a great time.

In light of the good time had by all, I suspect that many of the roughly 40,000 people who attended over the three days will have forgotten that with every burger or coffee etc that they purchased, they were making a donation to SSAFA, the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association.

The charity offers help and support to all serving and former members of the armed forces and their families or dependents.

I doubt that there can be a more enjoyable way in which to raise money for a good cause than by taking part in events like this.

Whilst the event commemorates with great style the whole decade that was the forties, as a former soldier I find the manner in which many people dress and the topics that they discuss at the event to be a touching reminder that the vast majority of people have an affinity with our servicemen and women and appreciate the sacrifices that they make.

The whole event has been a great showcase of what Haworth has to offer and I do not doubt that next year will be a great success too.

So once again to all that attended, local residents and businesses, thank you.
