SIR – In response to the cheap, nasty and ill-informed comments by Labour party supporter Peter Ashton (Letters, October 28) I would be interested to know how I am “using the education of other people’s children as a political football”?
Of course I want standards to improve but I don’t feel that setting unrealistic targets is the way to achieve this. It’s like setting yourself a target to lose 10 stone in weight in a matter of months or aiming to run a marathon when you can hardly climb the stairs - utterly pointless and demotivating.
Oh, and it may please him to know that I was wholly educated in the state, comprehensive sector, I have worked in a state-run college and undertaken voluntary work in state-run primary schools.
Cllr Debbie Davies (Conservative, Baildon ward), Conservative Spokesman for Children’s Services, Hartlington Court, Baildon
