SIR - Recently, enforcement officials and the police examined 26 minicabs in Bradford city centre, 10 of the vehicles were suspended due to bald tyres, lighting faults and other dangerous issues (T&A, October 20).

As the vehicles were inspected at the roadside I assume access was limited and a thorough underbody inspection was not possible, heaven only knows what disasters would have been found had an inspection ramp been available.

A short time ago a representative of the minicab operators was insisting that the safety inspection standards and frequency of such inspections were too onerous and should be relaxed.

It was also suggested that older vehicles should be able to be used and that driver’s ages should be reduced.

Anyone who has witnessed the standard of driving in certain parts of Bradford would have cringed at this last suggestion.

In view of this latest horror story I trust the safety inspection frequency will be made more realistic, daily should be about right.
