ACTION is clearly needed to combat the number of incidents occurring on the Bingley Relief Road.

There are regular reports of speeding traffic on the bypass and anyone who lives nearby can tell you that they frequently hear the sound of fast cars and motorbikes late at night and in the early hours of the morning.

There’s obviously a problem regarding the speed of vehicles using the road and that has resulted in some high-profile prosecutions and some tragic accidents.

It seems that extra measures do need to be introduced to ensure that drivers stick to the speed limits.

However, any such changes need to be carried out in a way that ensures the serious offenders are caught and that innocent day-to-day road users are not inadvertently trapped.

With that in mind, significant improvements are needed to the quality of signage telling people to slow down where the speed limit changes.

What’s more, safety along the route could be further boosted by improved signage telling people to get into lane before the roundabout at the Cottingley end of the bypass. At present, motorists who are unfamiliar with the road layout often arrive at the roundabout in the incorrect lane and have to perform a last-ditch panicky manoeuvre, exacerbating the risk of an accident.

With regard to speeding, the possibility of installing fixed cameras along the bypass has been mooted.

And if that’s the only way to ensure the serious offenders are caught - even if it’s late at night - then it may be the best answer.
