A root and branch overhaul of drug and alcohol treatment in the district is something that is overdue to tackle the changing face of substance abuse which represents a huge health problem for too many people.

Bradford Council’s decision to open up the process to public consultation will mean that those who are directly affected will have their chance to gain input into any changes made to the system.

The results will be fed back to the district’s Department of Health, which will use them to decide where changes need to be made in support and treatment for those who have substance abuse problems.

A recent report argued that the current system wasn’t effective, with users in treatment over long periods of time continuing to use illicit drugs.

It also made the very valid point – one that this newspaper has regularly highlighter – that the system needs to adapt to recognise changing challenges, including the abuse of over-the-counter and prescribed medication and so-called illegal highs.

It is important to state that current services do a very good job in treatment of those involved in substance abuse.

But as those involved recognise, more can be done to make the services they provide even more effective – and looking at the changing nature of drug taking is one way to do that.

Listening to the voices of individuals, particularly those who have been affected in some way by the issues, is another.

This remains one of the most important public health issues the district faces, and it is vital everything possible is done to make this review as effective as possible.
