Just a day after it was revealed that Bradford was poorly performing in the proportion of pupils attending schools rated good or better in education watchdog body Ofsted's standards, the latest primary league tables show that the district is among the most poorly performing in the country.

There will no doubt be much despair in response to these tables, not least from the teaching staff at schools across the Bradford district.

That's because there is much great work being done on the front lines of education in Bradford, and poor showings in the league tables unfortunately do not reflect it.

But as we found out when the Telegraph & Argus launched its Schools Awards last year, league tables and performance indicators never tell the whole story. Certainly, they don't tell the story of the hard work and dedication put in by teachers and support staff in our schools and classrooms every day of the week.

If you know of such work being done, whether it's by an inspirational teacher, a hard-working caretaker, a motivational head or governor, then let us know, because the nomination process for the second Schools Awards is underway now. You can find details on the T&A website.

The Schools Awards honour and mark this hard work. For it to continue, our teachers need support and resources from the local authority and from government.

Let's allow our teachers to do what they are best at - teaching, inspiring and motivating our children. Let's give them the tools to do the job properly. Then, perhaps, the league tables and reports might reflect the determination of our teachers to make Bradford succeed.
