ECONOMISTS reckon that we aren’t going to give up buying stuff, or flying because progress depends on consumption. They’re also sure that until all cars are powered by renewable electricity we won’t reduce the high levels of CO2 and methane that are distorting the climate.

RECYCLING stuff we don’t want, wrongly called waste, saves energy and raw materials, and produces less CO2, so we should take it seriously. Paper, glass, plastic, aluminium and steel can all be used many times so it’s surprising that the recycling rates are still so low in England.

LABOUR grandees are scraping around for a new leader if things go amiss for them in the forthcoming Copeland and Stoke Central by-elections, fearing that a continuation of Jeremy Corbyn at the helm could lead the party to disaster at the next general election and beyond.
