WHEN it comes to danger drivers who kill, the strength of feeling among bereaved families, politicians and law-abiding motorists across our district speaks volumes.

For too long, the agony and pain heaped on the friends and families of victims has not been matched by the sentences handed down to people whose dangerous driving results in a fatality.

Indeed, that imbalance was a major factor which motivated the Telegraph & Argus to launch its Stop the Danger Drivers campaign more than a year ago.

Today is a significant day as it marks the end of the Government’s consultation on plans to give life sentences to such offenders. Without doubt, the nature of the feedback received through that consultation - and the way the Government chooses to react to it - will have a major bearing on the deterrent and punishment of care-free motorists in the years to come.

Many hard-hitting and emotive comments, some of which are reported in today’s T&A, have been submitted by people in the Bradford district. If that sentiment is replicated across the rest of the country, surely the time will have arrived for the Government to act decisively on this issue.

The move towards stronger sentencing for danger drivers seems to have real impetus at the moment. But the process of bringing about new laws and changing sentencing guidelines can be a laborious one, which is why it’s vital that MPs keep up the pressure on the Government through the Parliamentary process until new legislation becomes a reality.
