PLANS to turn a former post office into an Indian takeaway have collapsed after the application was withdrawn.
A site in Kelvin Parade, Bromley, had been earmarked for the development, but proposals were ditched shortly before they were set to go before a council planning committee.
The decision will please residents who feared the proposed takeaway would bring about increased vandalism and litter in the area.
More than 80 angry residents opposed the plans by launching a petition against the development of the curry house.
About 18 months ago the post office on the site moved to Crofton Lane and the premises has remained vacant ever since. Chairman of the Oregan Square Residents' Association Jean Holden said: “We are happy the plans have been scrapped. I believe a takeaway in the area would have brought an influx of people after dark.
“In the past there have been problems with people littering and this probably would have brought these people back.”
Crofton councillor Viv Ross admitted the withdrawal of plans were “for the best”.
“There was so much opposition to the opening of a curry house, so it's a good thing it didn't even get to committee. The residents were very concerned this would bring a lot of people into the area at night.”
