‘Come together for whole new future’

Bradfordians are being urged to let go of the past and move the city towards a new lease of life.

The Bishop of Bradford, the Rt Rev David James, made the plea as part of his traditional Easter message.

You can see the message in full on-line at T&A TV on telegraphand argus.co.uk.

In it, he talks about breaking free from shackles instead of being held back: "We talk about regeneration for our city and that means new birth but we can only build on that if we have a sense of confidence in the future, in a future together.

"For us as a city, it also means something about dying, dying to our past as well as building on to it, dying to things that hold us back."

And he added: "We have to recognise we are no longer a city built on wool and we are no longer living in rural Pakistan. We have to come together for a new future, an uncertain future but one which is open to new life."

For the first time in 15 years, Christian churches across Bradford have come together to perform a Passion Play in Centenary Square tomorrow.

More than 80 churches have teamed up with Bradford theatre company Paper Zoo for the Passion Play which will be performed in Centenary Square.

The performance will begin with a singing, dancing procession through the city centre, leading into the square. A cross has been built for the production, which will tell the story of the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Christ. The play has been written by Christian group Saltmine.

Drama organisations taking part include the Great Horton Players and Bradford Players. Church choirs, including Bradford Cathedral choir, will provide music to link the scenes.

The event has been organised by Hope Bradford, the local arm of national campaign Hope 2008, which encourages different churches to work together to help communities.

Director Julia O'Keeffe said: "The last Passion Play in Bradford was about 15 years ago but some cities continue to hold one every year. If this performance goes well it would be good to make it an annual event in Bradford."

On Easter Sunday there will be a united churches service at Bradford Cathedral at 6.30pm. The Passion Play is in Centenary Square, Bradford, tomorrow at 2pm.

Bradford is a blot in this country I have just moved away and am too ashamed of it to admit where I am from. Lotsd of people have moved away who I know because of the same reasons. Bradford hasn't got much future as the way things are at the moment there. My children or myself had no future there there was nothing there for them to grow up to

The sound of indifference is deafening.

Rev James my dear man. The reason Bradford, na the worls is in such a mess is because of religion. I'm a christian, but the only time I look to god, is when I stub my toe, or receive my tax bill!

True, Bradford is a dump, but can Cleethorpes of all places, be any better? I went there once but it was shut.

The world is not in a mess because of Religion, but because of people's lip-service to it instead of embracing true Spirituality. The world is also in a mess largely because of Capitalism, which is exhausting the resources and keeping the majority poor whilst a minority get rich. A new socio-economic system based on Spirituality and environmental sustainability, as promulgated by the Buddhist economist, E.F. Schumacher, is the only way forward.

I don't think people actually realise that life is what you generally make it, and the place you live is just somewhere you borrow for a while until you die. I understand what you are all trying to say in some ways, but why can you not see the beauty of Bradford instead of concentrating on the negative?
I moved to Worcester 14 Month ago, not because i wanted to get away, but because my partner lives here and the best option was for me to move down. And do you know what? I it is nothing like Bradford. Bradford has character, personality, and a wonderful multi-cultural society. I am proud of where i come from, some people insult me down here, or comment silly things, but i do not agree, i actually stand up for Bradford because it is my home town and i love it.
People that are unhappy in their own lives tend to blame it on their surroundings. What people forget is that Bradford doesn't hurt anyone, Bradford isn't a dump, take a look deep down inside your soul and ask yourself, is it me that's really a dump?
if it was that bad the place would be empty.
Anyway, i thought i would forward my views.
A little quote for you all.
You can not love anything else, until you love yourself first!

Have a great day all xx
