Parks in funding boost
Kirklees is to be one of the first areas to benefit from new Government funding to give children's play areas a boost.
The Council is to receive £1 million of PlayBuilder funding from the Department of Child-ren, Schools and Families and this will be used to develop at least 20 play areas.
The news comes just four months after the Big Lottery Fund awarded Kirklees Council almost £1 million pounds through its Children's Play programme to help the Kirklees Play Forum develop more play opportunities in areas which need them most.
Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families, Ed Balls, said: "Children need places which allow them to meet their friends and have fun. Being able to burn off their energy in unstructured play is an important part of maintaining a healthy weight and life."
Councillor Liz Smaje (Birstall and Birkenshaw), cabinet member for leisure and neighbourhood services, said: "This is good news for Kirklees parks and playgrounds and the thousands of children and families who use them."
