SIX fire engines from Skipton, Settle, Bradford, Grassington and Silsden attended a fire which broke out in the Rackhams House of Fraser store, in Skipton, on Sunday night.

Station manager Tony Peel said: “We were called out at around 10.30pm to a fire in an office on the third floor of the store.

“The room was fully involved by fire and we used two hose reels and breathing apparatus.

“It was extinguished in around half an hour.

“Fortunately one of our men used to work there and knew the layout of the floor.

“There was smoke damage to the corridors but we managed to contain the fire.

“The high street was closed to traffic while the fire service was in attendance to allow us to move about freely.

“We think the fire started through an electrical fault but fire investigators are investigating to determine the cause.”

A window remains boarded up at the front of the building where the fire was located.

The front door to the store is also boarded where firefighters had to break in to reach the blaze.

No one was injured in the fire and the store was able to open to customers as normal on Monday.

The Skipton branch of House of Fraser is one of the stores earmarked for closure early next year in a company rescue plan.
