AN outstanding show of traditional countryside skills were demonstrated at a national walling competition in Kirkby Lonsdale.
The event had been organised at Fleet Farm to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Dry Stone Walling Association.
More than 50 competitors took part and Chris Wake, from Kilnsey, was awarded best waller on the field.
Andrew Mason, from Kirkby Lonsdale took first prize in the professional singles class.
Wallers from Lancashire, Yorkshire and Cumbria were among the prize winners in other classes which included professional pairs, amateur pairs and the inter-branch pairs class for current members of the DSWA.
The professional classes were sponsored by Armstrongs Aggregates Ltd and additional sponsors included Alston Natural Stone, Cumbria Quarrying Services and Kirkby Lonsdale Brewery. DSWA branches also contributed to the prize money pot. As well as cash prizes winners were presented with keepsake engraved tankards and rosettes.
Visitors to the competition were also able to learn more about hedgelaying with a display and demonstration provided by members of the National Hedgelaying Society.
