JACKIE Walters, who has been chairman of governors at Newby Primary School for over 25 years, had her dedication recognised with the Governor of the Year Award, and she dedicated the win to all the governors in the district.

The category was introduced at last year’s Schools Awards as a way of recognising the vital behind-the-scenes work done by governors and its popularity meant it returned for a second year.

In Mrs Walters’ time at the West Bowling school, Newby has been rated either good or outstanding by Ofsted.

Taking to the stage to accept the award from Michael Jameson, strategic director of children’s services at Bradford Council, Mrs Walters said: “I accept this on behalf of all the governors who give all their time voluntarily to work behind the scenes to make Bradford schools a great success in a great city with wonderful schools and great teachers.

“Winning was an amazing surprise. I feel so passionately about education and what contribution you as an individual can make to education.

“I’m glad this award has come back for a second year. People are really committed to being governors, and they play a vital role. Without governors, headteachers don’t have anyone else to engage with to improve schools.

“Communities expect the best education possible for their children, and governors are there to make sure that happens.”

After Mrs Walters had been nominated, school headteacher Janice Stephenson said: “She has been part of Newby since it opened in 1985. She offers me and the rest of the leadership team advice, support and challenge when necessary.

“She is part of a school that has a strong vision for its pupils.”

The category was sponsored by Bradford Council.
