BUTTERSHAW Business and Enterprise College was named winner of the Science and Technology award for its STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) provision, which is led by Joe Ryan.

The STEM academy at the school is regularly attended by 70 to 80 students, who take part in numerous science, technology and maths related workshops, as well as preparing for competitions with other schools.

The school also is part of the Centre of Excellence for Science, Environment and Technology – an Industrial Centre of Excellence partnership education provider between Bradford Council, leading businesses, the University of Bradford and local schools.

They have also competed in, and won, numerous technology contests, including Lego engineering competitions.

When he was told of the nomination, Mr Ryan said: “We’ve grown STEM from what was really very little provision to where we’ve now got a STEM pipeline.”

Accepting the award on stage with his team, Mr Ryan said: “I’m so proud to be here, and I want to celebrate my team who are here with me.

“We really are a strong team, and I’m so proud to be up here accepting this on behalf of the whole school.

“I’m so happy to win this on behalf of Buttershaw, it is a fantastic school.

“Science is always fantastic.

“I think Bradford is often looked down on for its levels of employment and skills. The more we can do to improve children’s chances of careers within STEM, the better it will be for Bradford.

“It is not just our school, we work with the University of Bradford and other organisations.”

When asked what the pupils will think of the win, he said: “They will be over the moon tomorrow, they’ll be really pleased.”

The Award was sponsored by the University of Bradford.
