THIS category is to celebrate the outstanding achievement and dedication of secondary school teachers.

Secondary school can be the most important time in the life of a young person. It is the time they decide what path they want to go down, work towards qualifications that can shape their future careers and learn who they are.

There to guide them through this hugely turbulent time of their lives are secondary school teachers, and we are looking for teachers that make an exceptional contribution to the school and the lives of their pupils.

Being a good secondary school teacher means being firm but fair, willing to listen to pupils but also willing to push them if needed, and to help getting even the most reluctant academic to learn and strive towards the best results they can achieve.

Candidates could be a new teacher who has made an instant impact, or a veteran who has helped generations of students be their best. They could be a teacher who helps pupils achieve all As, or one who helps pupils who would otherwise struggle academically to get the best results they can.

Winner in the 2016 awards, Hafiz Rahman, is an English teacher at Carlton Bolling College who played a part in the school’s efforts to tackle the threat of extremism.
