Carnival gets extra security
Tighter security will be brought in at Ilkley Carnival on Bank Holiday Monday to prevent a repeat of the drunken violence after last year's charitable event.
Police have asked carnival organisers to fence in the funfair on East Holmes Field, making it easier for officers to eject troublemakers and prevent them returning. A larger police presence is also expected in the town centre.
Last year's carnival was marred by drink-fuelled fights and arrests in the wake of the family event, and joint action by officers from Keighley Police and British Transport Police, which patrols Ilkley Station and local train services.
Local police later cited disorder after the carnival - alongside other drink-related crime around Ilkley's riverside - in their plea for councillors to support a Designated Public Places Order (DPPO) for part of the town. The order would give officers the power to confiscate alcohol from adults they feel are behaving in an anti-social way.
Ilkley Carnival Committee chairman, David Robinson, said: "The carnival committee has been liasing with the new inspector at Ilkley Police Station to basically minimise any disturbance. It wasn't anything major last year, but there's various measures been put in place to help control any disturbance."
