A man with a history of suicide attempts hanged himself in his bedroom, an inquest heard.
Anthony Paul Lupton suffered from meningitis in 1989 and his mother, Mavis Lupton, told the Bradford inquest that he had not been the same since.
In a written statement read to today's hearing, she said: "He became withdrawn and he tried to take his own life several times."
Mr Lupton, 53, had worked as a baker, and an engineer, and was unemployed when he died on January 11.
He was married with a 23-year-old daughter and was staying with his mother in Marlborough Court, Bradford Road, Menston.
Mrs Lupton said: "He stormed out of the house after we had a talk about money. He came back and went for a lie down - it didn't seem unusual."
She found him that evening dead in his bedroom.
"He should have been sectioned a long time ago," her statement said. "He's been let down by the mental health service.
