WHARFEDALE businesses could suffer if new customs arrangements are introduced at Dover.

That was the warning made by MP Alex Sobel (Lab, Leeds North West) in Parliament as he considered the potential impact of Brexit on firms in his area.

Mr Sobel discussed similar concerns when he visited Weidmann Whiteley's - an international paper supplier - base at Pool-in-Wharfedale in June.

Speaking in a House of Commons debate about customs arrangements last week, he said: "A number of northern businesses have come to me.

"They are all globally owned, global manufacturing and exporting businesses that use the port of Dover.

"They have said they are now looking at contingency with other ports because of the proposed customs arrangements.

"They are concerned that every port will have the arrangements and their businesses will have to move outside the UK."

Mr Sobel has made repeated warnings about the economic dangers of a 'hard Brexit'.
