AN MP has been discussing his work over a cup of tea with Brownies in Otley.

The 3rd Otley Brownies signed up to EqualiTeas - one of UK Parliament's 2018 events to mark important milestones for democracy.

The Representation of the People Act, which paved the way for all men and women aged over 21 to gain the vote (ten years later), was passed in 1918.

EqualiTeas ran from June 18 to July 2 and were organised around the UK to let people have a discussion over a 'cuppa' about what equality means to them.

MP Alex Sobel (Lab, Leeds North West) visited the Brownies on Thursday, June 28 when he spoke about both his time in Parliament and local events.

The event was also attended by parents and concluded with refreshments, cake and biscuits.

Evie, a Brownie Sixer, said: "The 3rd Otley Brownie leaders thought it was great that a busy MP could come along and support our event, we really appreciated it.

"I had a conversation with Alex who said that just under one third of MPs in the House of Commons are women, and that women could undertake all jobs in this country except underground mining."

Head of Education and Engagement at UK Parliament, David Clark, added: "Whether it’s chatting about the issues over a cup of tea, or engaging with one of the many exciting events as part of this year’s Vote 100 celebrations, there are many opportunities for schools, workplaces and community groups across Leeds to get involved in these key anniversaries.

"We can only work towards a more equal society by communicating with each other and building stronger communities."

Historically, tea parties and tea shops were used by the leading suffrage (right to vote) groups to advance their cause - and helped them increase awareness, discuss tactics and raise money.
