Young people who want to make a difference are being urged to stand in the Bradford and Keighley Youth Parliament (BKYP) elections.

Organised by Bradford Council's Youth Service, candidates are being sought now for the 2009 elections.

Youth workers and Members of the Youth Parliament (MYPs) will be handing out information and applications for the role in Centenary Square on Saturday from 10am to 4pm.

Councillor Colin Gill, executive member for services for children and young people, said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for young people to learn about the role of the MYPs and the work they do to address issues raised by their peers."

The elections will be held from January 26 to 30, 2009, and there are 30 seats up for grabs.

Paul Carter, BKYP Public Liaison Officer, said: "Prospective candidates will be given training throughout the summer so we are urging people to put their names forward as soon as possible."

BKYP elections are held every two years and six young people are selected to represent each of the five constituencies.

After the elections, constituency conferences are held to determine the issues in each area, which then become the MYPs' priorities.

More information about the elections and the work of the parliament is available on the BKYP website at www.bkyp.com

BKYP is nothing but a joke and a waste of public money.

How can anybody say that its a waste of money or time. I have worked with young people for 5 years and the bkyp have given young people a forum by which to voice concerns and how the service can be improved. These comments made are obviously from people who no nothing about the hard work these young people have done and the amount of time that young people put in to make a positive contribution to our community. It would be interesting to learn what the people who make these comments have done for their communitys. In all honesty i expect these people who have made these negative comments to make some low remark about what i have wrote and not add anything constructive. Hope im wrong and you come back with something worth reading.

John Bolton, you seem to work for the youth service, what does BKYP do apart from attend these forums where they chat abouth nothing but policies and proposals implemented by youth service. What actual powers to they have to change the way of youth service work/Projects within the district? I am not criticising the young people involved just the youth service, who have used this BKYP as a tool for them to claim young peoples wishes are being addressed.
We all know youth service wont help these young people, because if they did i think a lot more young people (even those hard to reach) would be involved.

Thanks for a good answer mr t. Yes you are correct i do work for the youth service and also as a volunteer running a football club. I understand the point you making but would say theres a much bigger picture here as i am sure your aware. Its bradford council that need to look at how it funds much needed youth services and out of school activitys. I am sure that i speak for the both of us when i say that we do more work as volunteers as we do paid youth workers. I think regardless of the funding and political barriers that are placed before us surley we must continue to give as much encouragment to the young people as possible. Being a youth worker and a volunteer has been the hardest yet most rewarding work i have ever done but i think in this line of work we just gotta keep going for the young people which i am sure the policy makers know this and use this to full advantage. As for my final comments i love it when i am proved wrong what a refreshing change.

These days i am retired, but i am still patron of my local cricket club, which has a thriving youth policy, in my younger days i was an adult voluntary worker at a youth club which ran numerous activities and trips.
Having said all that, i still think this project is of very limited use, and the post to which i am responding is frankly drivel.

Never have been happy with the Youth Service operate, as i feel young people involved with them are often influenced to think the way they are told to by the heads of service. young people who stand up against a certain issue youth service isnt happy about they are often barred from attanding any youth service activity.
Apart from all my negativity i am happy to see some changes taking place in ravenscliffe, the only part that bothers me is why has it taken 8 years to achieve this (When BKYP started)

hi all wow this has stired up some real feelings amongst people who have worked with young people for some time. I welcome the positive comments about ravenscliffe but must admit to being concerned about the thoughts and feelings about the youth service. Unfortunatley the service delivered is delivered only by the budget that is set by local council. In my years of service i have never witnessed the views of heads of service or workers to be drilled into young young people and must say that my own youth work delivery is lead, planned and funded by the young people who deserve every credit for their hard work. As for policy that is made initialy nationaly then localy prehaps we as adults need to ensure that our votes reflects what we find important in the general service delivery provided by the council as they are elected by use the people of bradford As for calling this conversation drivel i think its shaping into a positive conversation by people who now why young people dont always have the voice we would like them to have.
