Only one post office in Shipley will close under plans to axe 2,500 branches.

Shipley MP Philip Davies has been told St Paul's Road branch will shut as part of the closure programme, but the other 19 post offices in his Shipley constituency appear to have escaped the axe.

Mr Davies said: "Given that one in six nationally are closing I am obviously relieved only one is closing in my constituency and I am delighted they are planning to retain all the others, particularly in the villages. However, closing the St Paul's Road branch will be a blow to residents and to businesses."

Mr Davies said he fears queues will get worse at the main branch with the additional influx of customer.

The news comes after Post Office Minister Pat McFadden insisted the closures were necessary as the network is still losing half-a-million-pounds a day. He said the speed and scale of technological development in the UK were connected to the changes facing the post office network.

Yes! I see you're getting the hang of it. The recent cyclone in Burma, and the earthquake in China, are the latest symptoms of the coming Earth changes. There will be more natural disasters to come. The ongoing military conflicts and economic instability are also a sign. Expect to see the collapse of the USA (even civil war) and Global economic meltdown within the next year.

Get real Davies, Or this too much to ask? Post offices are the thing of the past. It's only a matter of time! Have you not emailed anyone or used the net yet?
Post Offices are an essential service and an important centre of the community. I don't want to have to pay my bills over the counter at a grocery store. many people don't have a Bank account, or don't want to use Direct Debit. If you live on a day to day basis, the Post Office is an essential place to make payments, or withdraw money. Not everyone has transport, so it is most inconvenient having to travel into town just to withdraw a tenner. It was much better when we had Giros. It's the same with other utilities, I don't want to buy my electricity off the gas company, or vice-versa, the world's gone mad. To hell with free enterprise - nationalize everything!

The real way forward for post offices is to offer them as franchises to private individuals. That way, any shop, store or pub can provide the service where it is needed. The old style post office just doesnt make enough money to be viable as a free standing business. It neeeds to be supported by other business.
