Toddler 'fat camp' results on TV

The amazing results of the country's first ever "fat camp" for toddlers will be unveiled on national television tomorrow night.

Not only did the children lose weight, but a study by Heart Research UK also demonstrated they reduced their risk of coronary heart disease.

The children, all under the age of five, followed a weight loss programme devised by Paul Gately, Professor of Exercise and Obesity and director of Carnegie Weight Management (CWM), who has run summer camps for overweight teenagers at Woodhouse Grove School in Apperley Bridge, Bradford, for eight years.

Now he has shown how the programme can work for younger children and the results will be show on ITV's Too Fat to Toddle' tomorrow night.

Focusing on four families with overweight children, the programme uses CWM's weight loss programme to see if this problem can be nipped in the bud before it's too late.

Professor Gately said: "Scientific research underpins our programmes and sets us apart from other children's weight management programmes - proving that what we do works.

"Currently there are over 4.5 million children who are already overweight and obese and therefore at risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

"This groundbreaking research proves that children can lose weight and reduce these severe health risks."

The study was based at the Carnegie International Camp and recruitment for this summer's camp is already well under way.

For the first time, the age range has been lowered to eight. Traditionally interventions have catered for children aged 11 to 17.

In addition the local camp will be hosting a day camp programme, so children who live in a commutable distance to it will be able to attend for the day, Monday to Fridays, 9am until 4pm, over the summer holidays.

Professor Gately added: "We are taking the bull by the horns and rolling out programmes nationally and lowering the age range to help us to reach out and help more children and families.

By expanding our successful intervention, we are providing clear evidence that supports the Government agenda of combating obesity and can demonstrate the real need and demand for this type of service provision."

The number of fat people of all ages never ceases to amaze me, there seems to be more of them everytime i go out.
In the old days such people used to be refered to as fat and jolly, but most of them look thoroughly misserable these days as they breathlessly struggle up Bradfords hills clutching the regulation water bottle and Greggs pasty.

Yes, you can see an increasing amount of obese children, with an increasing amount of Parents stuffing their lovely little faces with anything the loving child wants!
I am sorry, but, we have a Nation of People, some of whom, are parents. Most of these are the ones that are all mouth (in every way) and no logic or common sense coming from their brain.
Can they not understand that over eating and lack of exercise causes you to enlarge to an excess! When was the last time you saw a photograph of an obese person in Bergen Belsen?
Love your Children, DO you? Then why are you killing them, by subjecting them to Heart attacks; Liver damage; High blood pressure; Hip replacements; inability to breath, or walk. The list goes on and on. Parents look in the mirror, do you want you child to look like that!
NO, then start being a Parent and look after your Child!
