Around 300 police officers are to work in 47 new Neighbourhood Policing Teams across the district, it has been announced.
West Yorkshire Police revealed the number of police officers and police community support officers performing in such roles now totalled 1,647.
The inspector-led teams - of sergeants, constables and PCSOs - will cover the county's five districts, which match up with local authority areas.
People can meet the teams at roadshows this week.
Home Office Policing Minister Tony McNulty attended the launch of the new-look teams with West Yorkshire's Chief Constable Sir Norman Bettison, West Yorkshire police authority chairman Councillor Mark Burns-Williamson and Wakefield District Divisional Commander Chief Superintendent Marc Callaghan.
Sir Norman said "It is obvious to me, after 35 years in policing, that the thing the public wants to see more than anything is a regular patrol from familiar officers in uniform who understand the problems that exist within the community, and who resolve those problems which are of most concern to local people.

Shame that Bettison didn't make these views heard while he was an Assistant Chief Constable in West Yorkshire, he might've stopped the selling off of the local Police boxes that were situated in the hearts of the communities that needed them.
Still, dissent might've interfered with his promotion prospects and eventual Knighthood.
Too late to go back to "Good old-fashioned bobbying" now though Norm. That would require the support and consent of the law-abiding majority, and you people have done all you can to destroy that relationship.

Presumably, to rise to the post of Chief Constable you need a modicum of intelligence. So why as it taken our Norm 35 years to realise that people want bobbies on the beat? And I mean proper coppers with the full power of arrest not Blunkett Bobbies.

Admittedly, "bobbies on the beat" is what communities are always wanting.
Pantoman, don't you think that the police get just as frustrated as the rest of us? They have to contend with all the bureaucracy, league tables and new "iniatives" that come out, not to mention the total lack of support from the justice system in ensuring that the courts are able to mete out suitable sentences. I think as law abiding members of the public, we should give the police our full support.

Many people who have been victims of crime over the past ten years, and who have subsequently been dismayed by the police response, may find it difficult to agree.
Their eagerness to pursue easy targets rather than deal with real crime is shameful. Prosecuting victims of crime on petty technicalities and a total lack of discretion has alienated them.
Only a fool would support an organisation that was acting in a manner that was against the public good.

"resolve those problems which are of most concern to local people"
Crime - but then surely it has not took 35 years to work out that?

You're right, Deano, Bradford does have many problems, but we have to start somewhere and a visible police presence on the streets seems a good point.

Maybe, but it'd be interesting to know the ratio of PCSO's as opposed to real police officers involved in all this.

The public have been giving the police all the chances they could ever possibly hope for, but they've continually failed to deliver.
If you have faith in them you're in the minority.

Not much chance.
We're lacking a pile of rubble in that particular area of Bradford, so needs must.

Would be nice to see the figure's and the percentage of the bobbies time they are on the beat and not doing paperwork, courses, or other tasks which taken them away from their communities to cover shortfalls elsewhere?

The problem is that there are not enough of them. To have any impact their numbers need doubling at least. And society has to be prepared to pay for it. Fair enough, reduce the paperwork, but that in itself will not solve the problem.

Sheesh.
That's alright then. Fingers crossed, touch wood, everything might be alright. Ish.
We'll give it five years and then decide. Good. Right. And if it doesn't work? Well Norm will be retired and another genius will propose his or her 'new policing deal'.
And we'd better support that as well because that's the stance we've taken.
Shame that the stupidity of the fathers will undoubtedly come back to haunt their children, and by then it will be too late.
