Bus passengers are facing a fares increase to rival the price rises on train services.

First, the biggest operator of bus services in the Bradford district, is putting up some fares by as much as 14 per cent from Sunday.

The company says the increases are because of rising fuel costs.

Train fares on the Wharfedale Line and Harrogate Line go up tomorrow by as much as three times the headline inflation rate, with off-peak fares being hit particularly hard.

Now First is to increase ticket prices on its local and West Yorkshire-wide bus routes. Passengers currently paying 70p for their ticket will see the price go up by around 14 per cent to 80p, while the maximum off-peak fare on First's Leeds-based services will go up more than 12 per cent from £1.60 to £1.80.

A peak-time single fare currently costing £2.10 will go up to £2.30. Fares currently costing £1 or £1.50 will not change, however.

First says the prices of its day tickets, as well as pre-paid weekly, monthly and annual tickets will also rise.

FirstDay tickets available for unlimited use throughout West Yorkshire on one day will go up from £3.50 to £3.70. Meanwhile the First Day (Off Peak) ticket, which can be used within the Leeds Metropolitan boundary only, will also go up 20p, from £2.50 to £2.70.

West Yorkshire-wide weekly tickets will cost £15 instead of £14, while monthly tickets will go up by more than eight per cent from £48 to £52.

Yearly tickets will increase from £510 to £540, an increase ahead of November's headline inflation rate.

West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, Metro, has put up prices for its season tickets, in line with bus and train price rises.

Public transport should be getting cheaper, to encourage people to leave their cars at home. Oil reserves are diminishing and biofuel is ecologically unsound. We're facing total gridlock by 2012 and still insist it's our right to move our fat carcasses around in individual metal boxes. We need more buses, more often, and with bike racks. We need more trains - with guards vans for bikes and luggage, and better timetabling linkups.
Otherwise I need a car so that it doesn't take an hour-and-a-bleedin'-
half to go 12 miles to work every day on public transport..

If your wage doesn't increase as fast as prices are rising then you are getting poorer.

What about food inflation and electricity, gas, council tax etc, these are all increasing massively too.

But the government tries to tell us that inflation is at 2.1%

For once, Albion, I must take issue with you. I happen to be a free bus pass holder. I mistakenly thought that by using the bus and not my car I was helping to reduce congestion on our roads. I have had to endure many comments from people whom curently are fare-payers. My response is that I assume when they become eligible for their bus pass they won't bother to take it, bit of course I know full well that they will!
I agree with House Price Crash, the government does try to tell us inflation is 2.1% when it knows full well that the real rate is more than double this figure. But then this is a government that wouldn't recognise the truth if it stood up and smacked them in the face.

Whilst I agree rising fuel costs are a huge problem,(our costs for the week have gone up from £30 - £50)if anything that should be enough in itself to encourage people to use public transport, but constant rises (at least twice a year) by first buses especially, make people say, hang on the average car will take 2 adults and 3 kids at an average price of say £30 a week (£6 a day)mon - fri, to school/work and back and again to collect, but add up the seperate bus fares for 2 adults and 3 kids twice a day at least, or even day tickets, the cost is higher than the fuel cost of your car???? Where do the travel companies get their figures? That is what I would like to know.

I think the sentiments expressed by other contributors express valid opinions but miss a very important point.
The government dont want to encourage people onto public transport, they may say they do but the reality is that too much revenue would be lost from the taxes on fuel and motorists generally.
The green taxes are nothing of the sort, they are just using Green issues as an excuse to penalise the motorist and force more tax into government coffers.
If the authorities were interested in being green they could make public transport free!!

The trouble is that, unless they renationalise public transport, they can't make it free. Despite it being called a service, it's a capitalist venture (which is why we're now 'customers' not 'passengers'). This has also led to the cutting of services that are deemed uneconomical. The government are well aware of the urgent need to tackle the problems of our transport infrastructure but privatized companies won't endanger their profits for the sake of the public good or the environment

As the previous poster says, the government, despite all their rhetoric do not want people on public transport. If everyone left their cars at home the public transport system in this country would collapse. The government are fully aware of this so motorists will continue to be subject to high taxes and penalties because the government knows there is no alternative if people are to remain mobile.

I begrudge paying high busfare as it is, I pay over 25 quid per week on fares with my kids fares, then you get driveres who deliberately drive past them so they are late home. Not only that theres them that use fake tickets, (dayriders) and them that have passes they arnt entitled to. This pees me off. Whats worse is the service, when they turn up, and sittin on peed on seats, and dirty busses, oh and the drivers who insist on using the brake instead of the clutch at every opportunity.

Just been on 2 buses this morning to get to work and none of the buses advertised the fact that fares were going up. Before this report I'd actually gone on to first bradford web site to see if there were new prices as they normally do go up in January but lo and behold, nothing!

Think first need to get the bum in to gear and advertise the fact fares are rising at least a month before they do.

It's gonna cost me £60 per month to get to work!

The government are well aware of the urgent need to tackle the problems of our transport infrastructure but privatized companies won't endanger their profits for the sake of the public good or the environment"

And as such I will not be forced out of my 'tin box' to pay for 2nd class travel service, in dirty smelly conditions, risk my health from all the disease ridden passengers(ok not all, but you must admit the personal hygiene of many folk you are forced next to on a bus leaves a lot to be desired)stand and wait in the cold, and by the time the bus arrives I would be over half way to work. Sorry but until public transport is free and the high taxes we already pay is put to the use of making them so I will not be using them.

"The trouble is that, unless they renationalise public transport, they can't make it free. Despite it being called a service, it's a capitalist venture (which is why we're now 'customers' not 'passengers'). This has also led to the cutting of services that are deemed uneconomical. The government are well aware of the urgent need to tackle the problems of our transport infrastructure but privatized companies won't endanger their profits for the sake of the public good or the environment"

Buses are automatic so there is no clutch pedal
