Bus passengers are facing a fares increase to rival the price rises on train services.

First, the biggest operator of bus services in the Bradford district, is putting up some fares by as much as 14 per cent from Sunday.

The company says the increases are because of rising fuel costs.

Train fares on the Wharfedale Line and Harrogate Line go up tomorrow by as much as three times the headline inflation rate, with off-peak fares being hit particularly hard.

Now First is to increase ticket prices on its local and West Yorkshire-wide bus routes. Passengers currently paying 70p for their ticket will see the price go up by around 14 per cent to 80p, while the maximum off-peak fare on First's Leeds-based services will go up more than 12 per cent from £1.60 to £1.80.

A peak-time single fare currently costing £2.10 will go up to £2.30. Fares currently costing £1 or £1.50 will not change, however.

First says the prices of its day tickets, as well as pre-paid weekly, monthly and annual tickets will also rise.

FirstDay tickets available for unlimited use throughout West Yorkshire on one day will go up from £3.50 to £3.70. Meanwhile the First Day (Off Peak) ticket, which can be used within the Leeds Metropolitan boundary only, will also go up 20p, from £2.50 to £2.70.

West Yorkshire-wide weekly tickets will cost £15 instead of £14, while monthly tickets will go up by more than eight per cent from £48 to £52.

Yearly tickets will increase from £510 to £540, an increase ahead of November's headline inflation rate.

West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, Metro, has put up prices for its season tickets, in line with bus and train price rises.
