A man accused of the murder of Pc Sharon Beshenivsky appeared in court via videolink today.

Mustaf Abdullah Jama, 27, made his first appearance before a judge, via a video link to Wakefield Prison, where he is on remand.

He had been arrested and extradited from Somalia the African just over a week ago and flown back to the UK with West Yorkshire detectives, before appearing at Leeds magistrates court to face charges of murder, robbery and firearms offences.

At today's preliminary hearing Nicholas Wayne, representing Jama, told the judge, Mr Justice Wilkie, there was no indication as far as pleas to the charges was concerned.

Jama, wearing a grey sweatshirt, listened intently throughout the 15-minute hearing. He replied: "Yes, sir," when asked by the court clerk if he could hear him and to confirm his name.

He is accused of murdering PC Beshenivsky on November 18, 2005, in Morley Street, Bradford, robbery, two charges of possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life and two charges of possessing prohibited weapons.

Mr Justice Wilkie said there would be a further hearing at Leeds Crown Court on November 30.

A plea and case management hearing will be held on January 18, with a provisional trial date for April 28, probably to be heard at Leeds.

The judge told Jama he would have to appear in court for the next hearing. He remanded him in custody. There was no application for bail by Mr Wayne.

PC Beshenivsky, 38, of Hainworth, near Keighley, a mother-of-three and stepmother-of-two, was shot dead outside the Universal Express travel agents in Morley Street as she attended a report of a robbery.

Her colleague, PC Teresa Milburn, 37, was shot and wounded in the incident.

Jama's brother, Yusuf Abdillh Jama, 21, of Birmingham, and Muzzaker Imtiaz Shah, 26, of London, were jailed last December for a minimum of 35 years for the murder of PC Beshenivsky.

Three other men have been imprisoned in connection with the robbery and killing.
