If you need to build up your fitness for the long walks of summer after a winter of relative inactivity, then one way to go about it is to intersperse short bursts of harder walking into your normal ramble. Do a couple of minutes of fast walking repeated every so often. Or when you are faced with a steep gradient try to keep your speed up all the way and then take a rest at the top.
