With Lent starting today, several senior churchmen have suggested that people should give up some luxuries to cut their carbon footprint instead of or as well as the usual items they give up.
The 40-day Carbon Fast lists simple energy-saving actions that can lead towards a lighter carbon footprint, including snubbing plastic bags, insulating the hot-water tank and checking the house for drafts. On the first day, it has suggested removing one light bulb from a prominent place as a visual reminder during Lent. On the final day, people are encouraged to replace the missing bulb with an energy-saving one.
