With diesel already more than £5 a gallon and petrol approaching that figure, cutting back on fuel use not only makes good sense for the planet but also for your pocket. With the rising cost of food eating into people's declining budgets, now's a good time to get into good habits over not wasting food and reusing it - like turning a Sunday roast into a stew for the week. If climate change is having an effect on Britain's weather, then our plants and animals will be among the first harbingers of it. Every year recorders make a note of tell-tale signs of spring in their area to help scientists build a picture of what is happening to our flora and fauna, and you can join in by going to naturescalendar.org.uk and help to contribute to Springwatch.

This week is part of Fairtrade Fortnight so why not take advantage of the offers in many shops and supermarkets to try some products that put more money in the pockets of producers in the Third World and support education and health services in their communities.

Tomorrow is One Bin Day, a chance for everyone to realise just how much they throw away at work and to think about what they could do instead. Organisers Envirowise suggest taking away all the bins by desks and putting one bin in the centre of the room - then just see what happens. If your office is average, that one will quickly become full - full of waste that can easily be reduced, reused or recycled.

Now is the time to buy your salad and vegetable seeds and prepare to sow them so you have fresh greens to eat all spring and summer.

Make a scarifice to show you care
8:33am Wednesday 6th February 2008
With Lent starting today, several senior churchmen have suggested that people should give up some luxuries to cut their carbon footprint instead of or as well as the usual items they give up.
