Kelly Thorne and her mum will take part in the Bradford Epilepsy Action 10k run, five years after her brother died because of the condition.

Karl Thorne had suffered from fits since the age of eight and died after a severe seizure in his sleep when he was 13.

An inquest into his death in 2004 found that he suffered from epilepsy, despite doctors never having diagnosed the condition. Kelly, 19, of Lynfield Drive, Chellow Grange, said: “We found him one morning when we went to get him up for school.

“He had had a lot of fits when he was younger and it runs in our family.

“It was a very hard time for the family. We are doing this to remember him and to raise money for a good cause.

“The more research that can be done into epilepsy the better.”

Kelly and her mum Chantelle, 39, are both new to running and the 10k will be their first race.

Mrs Thorne said: “I don’t want this to happen to anybody else’s family.

“The run is only a few days after the fifth anniversary of Karl’s death so it is a good thing for me to do.

“It’s keeping us focused.”

Mrs Thorne, who works at Lynfield Mount Hospital, added: “I want to thank all my colleagues for sponsoring me and supporting such a good cause.”

The run, on Sunday, March 29, is supported by the Telegraph & Argus, Bradford Council and the Airedale Athletics squad.

It will begin and end in Centenary Square, Bradford, with runners travelling along Canal Road towards Frizinghall and back.

Prizes will be awarded for male and female first, second and third places as well as veterans.

Runners are reminded that the deadline for entries is March 22. More than 900 people have signed up so far and the race total cannot exceed 1,250.

It costs £15 to enter, or £13 for those affiliated to an athletics club.
