Ground-breaking research in Bradford in supporting families affected by dementia features as one of the most important research projects of modern times in a report published today.

The Big Ideas for the Future report, published by Research Councils UK and Universities UK, selected the University of Bradford’s work from hundreds of submissions.

The report, narrated and backed by the likes of Professor Lord Robert Winston, Dr Alice Roberts and Professor Iain Stewart, pulls together the leading research projects taking place across UK universities.

The study into support for families affected by dementia aims to develop a better understanding of how couples living with the condition make decisions on a daily basis.

The chairman-elect of RCUK, Professor Rick Rylance, said: “Research has an impact on all our lives.

“Whether it is a breakthrough in experimental science, or an invention that makes new things possible, or a project that leads us to understand better the strengths and weaknesses of our society, research is the key to the UK’s growth, prosperity and well-being.

“Big Ideas for the Future showcases just some of the excellent research being carried out in UK universities that achieves these aims.

“It is vital we continue to support the talented individuals whose work makes a real difference.”

The University of Bradford study is hoping to inform debate on decision-making by couples living with dementia, the decision-making abilities of people with dementia themselves and the particular forms of support which can be offered to them.
