New students in Bradford are being warned to stay safe and to be aware of the danger of drugs after the death of a student from Shelf who took ecstasy while at university in Leeds.

Freshers Week activities have been highlighting the risks of illegal substances, with University of Bradford students being handed bottle stoppers to stop their drinks from being spiked.

Other safety campaigns include one called Keep An Eye On Your Mate.

On Wednesday a Leeds coroner warned of the Russian roulette risk of taking ecstasy after Leeds Met undergraduate Adam Dixon (pictured), 18, was found dead in his bed at the university’s Beckett Street campus in Headingley.

He had split a gram of MDMA with two friends on January 7.

Mr Dixon, a former headboy at Hipperholme and Lightcliffe High School who had been good at rugby, was pronounced dead by paramedics when friends raised the alarm.

The student was in his first year of studying for a multimedia technology degree.

Coroner David Hinchcliff recorded a narrative verdict of “death as a consequence of non-dependent use of ecstasy”.
