People in Bradford can try their hand at being a surgeon when the city’s hospital throws open its doors in a major showcase event.

Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s annual open day takes place on Wednesday, September 12, and will give people a chance to discover what work is going on across the organisation.

This year, staff from urology will join forces with the theatre team to give the public a behind-the-scenes look at how to operate the trust’s new £2 million Da Vinci surgical robot.

Foundation Trust chairman David Richardson said: “The arrival of the Da Vinci robot in Bradford is a huge coup for the hospital and is a leap forward in the advancement of surgery for the benefit of our patients.

“So if you would like to slip on the surgeons’ gloves and have a go, please come to this year’s open event as it’s a chance to see and experience the brilliant facilities and services we are providing here.”

The event takes place in Field House at Bradford Royal Infirmary between 2pm to 4.30pm. From 3pm to 4pm there is a chance to hear about the full range of projects going on within the Foundation Trust including the work at the Bradford Institute for Health Research (BIHR) which is which is based at Bradford Teaching Hospitals.

There will be a special lecture on the Institute’s research studies by its director, Professor John Wright, who will signal how their work – which includes Born in Bradford – is bringing benefits to the district’s patients. Visitors will also get the chance to visit the BIHR’s clinical research facility at Temple Bank House.

The open event will also give people and patients the opportunity to speak to specialist teams for health advice and visit displays on subjects ranging from respiratory medicine and diabetes to neo-natal research.
