SIR – Although I viewed with some trepidation the proposal to make one lane under the Dudley Hill roundabout a ‘no-go’ lane for single drivers, I decided to wait and see how it functioned before leaping in with my comments.

Well, it’s been functioning (if that’s the word) for some weeks now, and I must say the results have outweighed all my worst fears.

During the restricted times twice a day (7am-10am and 4pm-7pm), what used to be a bit slow-moving at times now becomes a tailback with an almost empty ‘2+’ lane and all the traffic that used to straddle two lanes now packing into the right-hand lane. Formerly, this used to be a quick way to get into Bierley by going down Dawson Lane.

I’ve noticed quite a few single drivers braving the restriction and zooming along the empty ‘2+’ lane, plus a few HGVs, which are supposed to be banned. The traffic lights when drivers try to filter into the appropriate lane (left into Knowles Lane, straight ahead, or U-turn back to the roundabout) just add to the confusion.

It’s notable that traffic moves much faster outside the restricted times.

Incidentally, Leeds was first to try this sort of scheme after the turn-off from the M606 on to the M62, and its noteworthy that the ‘2+’ lane on that stretch has been blocked for several months now. Time for a rethink.
