SIR – It is all very well for the T&A Editorial (March 13) to call for The Odeon cinema building to be demolished. The editor has been calling for exactly that since day one.

What is much more pertinent is that repairs and maintenance were not carried out by Yorkshire Forward, the previous owner, as admitted by Councillor David Green, the executive member for regeneration.

Indeed, one has to wonder why Bradford Council did not insist that the building, in a conservation area, was not suitably maintained by Yorkshire Forward, or otherwise do the work itself, then send the bill to the owner.

It is all very well pointing out vegetation growth and damaged brickwork. Any other responsible property owner would have kept their building properly maintained. That Yorkshire Forward did not do so is scandalous. However, like so many such bodies, there never seems to be any redress.

The Odeon may currently look rather sad, but there is no doubt that, with the right will, it could still be properly refurbished to wonderfully complement the adjacent Alhambra theatre in a way that the suggested New Victoria Place never could.
