Confusion over title?

Sir – Re ‘City mayor vote is in the electors’ hands’ (T&A, February 13) – I, too, agree with the opinions of the local party leaders that Bradford does not need another layer of local administration. It is not often that unity breaks out across the council chamber.

There is another concern that could lead to a “yes” vote via misunderstanding – I suspect many electors will believe they are voting for the person who wears the red robes, a large gold chain and a fancy hat.

The established head of our civic service is the Lord Mayor, who is replaced annually.

It is silly to use the same name “mayor” for these two separate roles.

The new post should be renamed as the President of Bradford. Everybody would easily understand this term, as we are familiar with the role of the top person in America.

The local referendum due on May 3 should ask the people: “Do you support a local President” to boss City Hall? I am sure we would get a very clear answer.
