SIR – There has to be an alternative to developemnts such as the ones in Bingley and Menston by approving many smaller sites throughout the district which would not put such impossible demands on the infrastructure, including the roads.
In the 1960s, traffic engineers at Bradford Council had full plans drawn up for an inner and outer ring road linked by flyovers and roundabouts to the main radial routes into the city.
Unfortunately, the anti-road lobby denied this opportunity and scuppered the Shipley bypass along the Aire Valley which was needed as long ago as 1968.
More recently, this disaster has been aided and abetted by the green lobby which is why the city does not have a superb road network.
What they have done is to inflict the current diabolical situation on the city with the resultant pollution. They should hang their heads in shame.
Unfortunately, because of the current economic situation, there is no hope of implementing the schemes which could have been afforded in the 1960s/70s.
All we will be left with are sticking plaster solutions unless someone is brave enough to start building more roads.
