SIR – With reference to the front page feature (T&A, January 26) concerning Councillor Val Slater, I was astounded to read an acceptance to become the “Devil’s Disciple” in the campaign to save the green field sites from new homes development which is supported by the protesters in such areas as the Tong Valley.
Councillor Slater has an excellent track record in the Royds ward, her dedication and enthusiasm knows no bounds. She is fair-minded and well-respected by her constituents, many of whom have had good reason to appreciate her support on various matters.
I have great difficulty in believing that the role of Devil’s Disciple – charismatic as it may appear – was ever intended, but may well have been the sting in the tail of the contemporaneous duties which were annexed to the appointment of Executive Member for Housing and Planning during her year as Deputy Lord Mayor, by command of the infamous Ian Greenwood.
The referendum for an Elected Mayor in November at an estimated cost of £114,000 must be increasing in popularity every day.
